God is full of surprises. Tonight Stephanie and I ended up alone at a Japanese Hibachi restaurant (to dodge the Halloween crowd). We were joined by a family we did not know and quickly struck up a conversation. They are Evangelical Christians that have attended the Church of the Highlands for years. We talked about our faith and the father (Jay) revealed he had a number of friends that had converted to Catholicism. Stephanie then began to share about my conversion. As the dinner was ending they asked us to pray for their son Jack (he is standing in front of me in the photo). He is finishing treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma tomorrow morning when he will have surgery. We said we would pray but asked if we could do so right there in restaurant. They agreed and Jack instinctively walked over to us. I asked Jack, "Can I put my hand on your shoulder?" He said, "That's weird but ok." Then Stephanie did the same. As we were about to pray Jay said something like, "Well, lets all go and lay hands on Jack." I prayed fervently for his healing and restoration and then Stephanie closed with prayer for him and their entire family as well. It was quite remarkable to meet and begin as strangers and end up laying hands on a sick child in an empty public restaurant. God is so very good. We were grateful to be there to pray for Jack and to bear witness of the Catholic faith to this beautiful family. Please remember Jack and his family in your prayers as well. His surgery will be on Thursday morning November 1st.
God's desire is to break into the mundane and show Himself. When we are open to being His instruments, He uses us to serve those in greatest need. His mercy endures forever.
